Sartorius opens new plant in India

Goettingen, Germany | Bangalore, India, October 30, 2009 - In a ribbon-cutting ceremony the process and laboratory equipment provider Sartorius inaugurated its new plant at the Sartorius Group's location in Bangalore, India. Together with some 100 guests from the scientific community and politics, CEO Dr. Joachim Kreuzburg, Supervisory Board Chairman Prof. Arnold Picot and Managing Director of Sartorius India Amit Chatterjee officially started up operations at the large building complex covering 10,000 square meters, or around 107,640 square feet. At its new site, Sartorius has combined its five decentralized individual locations in Bangalore into a single new plant on premises comprising an area of 40,000 square meters or 430,560 square feet, thus creating new capacity for the company's fast-growing Indian business in both Group divisions. Among other products, Sartorius in Bangalore, India, develops and manufactures bioreactors and additional equipment for pharmaceutical customers, lab equipment as well scales and other weighing equipment for industrial applications. The Sartorius Group invested approximately 5 million euros in the new plant complex.

In his address to the attendees, Dr. Kreuzburg stated that over more than two decades, Sartorius has built up a strong position in India with respect to its local and global customers from the biotech, pharmaceutical and food sectors. Following its German sites with some 2,220 employees, Sartorius India with its staff numbering nearly 500 members now has the second-largest workforce within the entire Sartorius Group. "I am especially delighted that despite the impact of the financial and economic crisis, we can propel the further development of our business in India forward with our new plant," said Dr. Kreuzburg. In the biopharmaceutical field, India has meanwhile been playing a globally respected role, especially in the production of generics, and increasingly for innovative medications as well, according to Dr. Kreuzburg. In its Mechatronics Division, the company is benefiting, among other things, from the increasing investments made by global and local food producers alike, he said. Sartorius is providing its weighing and control equipment for these producers' manufacturing operations, as Dr. Kreuzburg commented. "Many of our international key accounts are increasingly expanding their production and research facilities in India and are manufacturing products there in compliance with international standards. For these key accounts, we as global suppliers who are thoroughly familiar with the local and international requirements are a first-class partner on site," stated Dr. Kreuzburg. In India, Sartorius employs engineers and scientists who have an outstanding education in microbiology, chemistry and process engineering and are currently working on new developments for both of the company's divisions, according to Dr. Kreuzburg.

The company's expanded capacity in India enables it to create and develop new process technologies and to custom-tailor these together with customers in the applications laboratories at the plant complex in order to meet customers' individual process requirements. The new facilities are designed to supply the Indian marketplace and additional Asian markets and, moreover, produce components for the Group's own manufacture worldwide.

Sartorius has been operating in India since 1987. The new plant is located near the international airport and the central hub of the city of Bangalore, thus offering optimal connections for international and national transportation and logistics.

Scales.com launches Premier Online Community serving the entire Scale Industry and its’ market
Scales.com, one of few, and the scale industry’s only true global community, is pleased to announce the launch of the most in-depth on-line resource and meeting place for everyone and anyone involved in weighing and measurement. Find it at www.scales.com.

“The advent of the internet has been a valuable tool for most industries and although there has been some progress within the scale industry, an online community designed to help customers, scale dealers, scale distributors, and scale manufacturers , and there for the benefit of all has not materialized – until now according to Julie Jensen.

“For too long, the scale industry has lacked a location where all people and the industry can converge. In the past, there have been attempts to use generic names to capture this market, but their purpose was more to set up a direct-sell discount site rather than to serve the industry and its customers as a whole” . The site serves to educate the market and deliver up to date news and resources within the industry as well as providing a venue to bridge the “bricks and mortar businesses with online convenience, without customers experiencing the risk of the unknown.

“Furthermore, generic sites have traditionally limited their scope to an extremely narrow use and/or to the North American market, whereas Scales.com is a global marketplace for all scale professionals and consumers throughout the world”. For any and all that have an interest, a need, a question within the scale industry. It will be a one-stop site for all inquiries and services.

The launch of Scales.com is only the beginning for the industry as the site will continue to evolve over the next few months; adding new and innovative features and information that will benefit the scale industry as a whole.

Detecto's Model 437 Physician Scale Manufacturing Shown on TV's
Webb City, MO - Detecto's renowned physician scale manufacturing processes have been featured in a 2009 episode of cable TV's popular program "How It's Made" airing on the Science Channel. The segment details the production of a Detecto model 437 physician scale used in hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, locker rooms and homes.

The "How It's Made" research director contacted Detecto Scale after his wife was in the hospital with an illness and he saw Detecto medical scales and step-on cans in use throughout the hospital. Once his wife regained her health, he contacted Detecto and requested to feature the scale manufacturer in an upcoming segment.

The physician scale episode will air first on the Science Channel Feb. 13, 2009 at 8 pm CST. It will then go into syndication to be shown on other channels, such as the Discovery Channel. The episode will be translated into over 3 dozen different languages to be shown internationally. Detecto's model MCS food service hanging dial scale has also been featured in a "How It's Made" episode last December.

Detecto President David Perry says, "When our company was approached by the How It's Made production department for the television show, we were highly honored that we were chosen."

He goes on to cite the unique aspects of Detecto that make the company a premium choice for a manufacturing process educational program; such as, worldwide brand name recognition for "Cardinal" and "Detecto", the wide-ranging scale line the company manufactures in the United States, ISO-9001:2000 certification, and the company's unique ability to manufacture all aspects of the scale in-house.

"We're proud of all the people who make it possible every day, and still humbled by the realization that hard work and perserverance pay off in this great country we live in," Perry says.

UK to become world leader in metrology training
A large volume metrology (LVM) training programme to be launched next week (3 November) by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will be the first of its kind in the world. The new training modules are based on the success of NPL's dimensional measurement training programme, which has led to efficiency gains across the UK's manufacturing industry,

NPL said it established the programme following a number of calls from big businesses in the UK, Europe and America, such as Airbus and Boeing. Until now, this type of training has been largely developed in-house, with no independently recognised courses available.

The courses will apply the training objectives of the existing framework to the equipment and methods used in large volume metrology. LVM presents significantly different challenges due to the scale of the equipment and the environmental issues created by having to measure outside the laboratory. Participants will learn to question, understand and plan the best way to measure, beyond simply being able to use the equipment.

This will help employees build in systems to the manufacturing process, reducing errors and waste, and improving quality control and accuracy. This ultimately means businesses can increase productivity and respond to their customers more quickly.

Airbus UK has committed funding to developing the programme and other companies, including Rolls-Royce and Boeing, along with leading academics have helped shape it.

One of the developers of the training, University College, London's Stephen Kyle, said LVM was now an integral and indispensable tool in manufacturing construction and assembly. He went on: "Its proper understanding is critical to its successful application but until now only isolated pockets of knowledge such as text books and equipment manuals were available. NPL's new training course modules provide structured, guided learning across the field of LVM, for both beginners and advanced users, and help to fill a major gap in this technology."

Dr Brian Bowsher (pictured), managing director of NPL, added: "Industry looks to NPL, as the UK's Measurement Institute, to offer the necessary support to ensure it benefits from the best possible measurement expertise. In launching this course we are meeting the needs of the manufacturing industry, and so supporting a vital part of the future economy in the UK and around the world."

The courses will have significant impact in a range of industries throughout the world, notably aerospace, automotive and defence, but also energy and medical. NPL is currently in talks with accreditation body EAL, the UK's leading awarding body for engineering, technology and related sectors, regarding turning the course into a certified qualification.
